Water for wellbeing in sports grounds

Water is critical for keeping our sports grounds healthy so Naarm (Melbourne) is a great place to live. Water helps keep these areas playable, and cool during hot summers. Using clean, recycled water to irrigate these areas helps protect our valuable drinking water.

Water for wellbeing in our sports grounds:
  • Sports grounds are great places to exercise and socialise. They keep us healthy, involved in our community, and connected with friends and family.
  • Our sports grounds need smart approaches to watering to help them flourish while using water wisely.
  • Irrigating our sports grounds is also important because the plants and trees help cool the local area during hot summers. Irrigated grass can keep an area around 20 degrees cooler than dry grass.
  • They do this through shading, through the plants’ release of water through their leaves, and by evaporation of any rainfall that collects on the leaves and soil.
  • Our sports grounds are increasingly being irrigated with recycled water, which is more reliable in our drying climate.

The new Dingley Recycled Water Scheme will deliver recycled water to around 40 sites in the Bayside, Kingston, Greater Dandenong and Monash Local Government Areas. Supplying local parks, world-class golf courses, sporting ovals, laundromats, market gardens and nurseries, the scheme will help preserve drinking water supply, regardless of changing climate conditions.
