Program flyer

International and regional teams spent 2 weeks in Cambodia and Thailand. The mission had several objectives:

  • Deliver training on nature-based solutions and benefit–cost analysis to representatives from Cambodia’s Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction. 261 people—experienced government representatives and the up and coming generation of practitioners and decision makers—explored how to incorporate nature-based solutions (NbS) in urban contexts in Cambodia, the challenges of comparing NbS and conventional grey infrastructure, and how to apply benefit–cost analysis (BCA) for different development options in master planning.

  • Progress the Akreiy Ksatr case study – With Municipal and MLMUPC staff, the RUCaS team visited road sections identified for upgrade and expansion, functioning floodplain habitats, rice fields and orchards, and a high school on the banks of the Mekong. The case study will demonstrate how NbS solutions can be applied in these contexts.

  • Progress the Battambang case study – The RUCaS team met with the Deputy Governor and the Smart City Team, presenting draft renders for the city centre. We also visited potential road sections to demonstrate NbS concepts including in and around the new Japanese Park, riverfront and new Night Market district.
  • Progress the On Nut case study – The TWG discussed the benefits and costs of various NbS options applied to the On Nut waste transfer site in Bangkok and considered recommendations for the site. The group also considered what is involved in implementing recommendations and supporting wider application of NbS to similar brownfield rehabilitation sites, including those that previously contained waste.

  • Co-convene and participate in Scaling Nature-Based Solutions in the Mekong MAP–WEC partner workshop – Michael Simon (International Lead and RUCaS Program Manager) was led a presentation on GEDSI – gender equality, disability and social inclusion – in upscaling nature-based solutions (NbS).
    • Michael and Dr Song Ha Le (RUCaS Regional Coordinator) outlined emerging lessons on upscaling strategies to advance NbS and GEDSI from our work in the Mekong, particularly in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam.
    • Ms Trịnh Thị Thu Thủy (Hanoi Association of People with Disabilities (DP Hanoi) Lead Researcher and Advocate) outlined our collaborative research looking into disability inclusive disaster response in the context of climate change and water insecurity.
