Protecting headwater streams during urban development

Water Sensitive Cities Australia is working with Melbourne Water to explore opportunities for sustainable urban development in headwater streams of Greater Melbourne.

We’re using Aitken Creek – a tributary of Merri Creek – as an example. The headwaters of Aitken Creek flow through the Craigieburn West Precinct Structure Plan (PSP). This PSP includes a requirement to protect these waterways, but does not specify how.

A recent workshop in Melbourne brought together researchers and practitioners to identify novel solutions for protecting Aitken Creek. Participants discussed and refined possible solutions, considering how they could be applied and implemented in Aitken Creek.

The final output will be a series of concepts that Melbourne Water and others can use to influence waterway management, urban design and integrated water management in headwater catchments.

Our thanks to all participants and in particular Associate Professor Leon Barmuta (University of Tasmania), Professor Alex Felson (University of Melbourne), Phillip Birtles (Sydney Water), Dr Holly Kirk (RMIT University), Professor Chris Chesterfield (Monash Sustainable Development Institute) and Jamie Ewert (Alluvium Group).
